HEARTS THROUGH HISTORY ROMANCE WRITERS
April 2007 Romance through the Ages Contest
(email submission-deadline 10/3/07, results posted 29/4/07)
Just had the results of my first overseas competition entry, in fact my first writing competition ever. I had to screw up my nerve to submit the first chapter of my novel, but I don’t regret it for one second.
The results were predictably varied….one judge loved it(143/150), one judge loathed it (46/150)and I’m sure would have given me a zero if they could, and the third judge was right in the middle(96/150) *LOL* Now I have to read through the comments and see if there are similarities or parallels and make the necessary changes.
I guess what these marks really show is that some stories appeal to some readers, other’s don’t. Pretty much what I expected. Of course, I had a private fantasy of being ‘discovered’ as the next great historical writer, but who doesn’t.
In the end, the competition was a great way to get feedback and contructive criticism, which is what it’s all about. I’m entering three other competitions this year, one I’ve already sent an extract for, so I can’t change that; but the other two I have a bit of time still to make some alterations. Roll on June.
